In Summer 2019, Caltrans will begin multiple projects to improve
safety and traffic flow on State Route 60, a heavily traveled east-west
corridor for commuters and goods movement through Southern California. 

Dubbed "the 60 Swarm" due to the swarm of projects, these projects will start in Summer 2019 and continue through Fall 2021. The 60 Swarm projects include the SR-60 Bridge Replacement Project and a separate SR-60 Pavement Rehabilitation Project.

Start Dates
The “60 Swarm” will begin on Friday, July 26.  The paving project will require fifteen (15) consecutive weekends (except for Labor Day) of full directional closures on SR 60 from I-15 to 60/91/215 Jct. (12 miles). All lanes and ramps will be closed during the work from Fridays at 10:00 p.m. to Mondays at 5:00 a.m. 

SR-60 Pavement Rehabilitation Project
Caltrans will rehabilitate 18 miles of pavement on SR-60.  Pavement rehabilitation work will include multiple, full directional freeway lane and ramp closures to the SR-60 freeway from 10 p.m. Friday nights to 5 a.m. Monday mornings, starting in late July through mid-November 2019. The remainder of the work will be completed with lane closures through Summer 2021.

The paving project will require fifteen (15) consecutive weekends (except for Labor Day) of full directional closures on SR 60 from I-15 to 60/91/215 Jct. (12 miles). All lanes and ramps will be closed during the work from Fridays at 10:00 p.m. to Mondays at 5:00 a.m. Partner transportation agencies have projects that correlate with Caltrans projects that also affect motorists.

Project Cost:  J. McLoughlin Engineering Co., $134.5 million with $16.9 million in SB-1 funding

SR-60 Bridge Replacement Project 

The $23 million bridge replacement project includes $10.4 million in funding from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.  Sema Construction of Riverside, will replace three bridges along SR-60 at Pipeline Avenue, Monte Vista Avenue and Benson Avenue in San Bernardino County. The vertical clearances on these bridges are nonstandard and the structures continue to be struck by oversize vehicles, which causes significant damage. The 18-month project to replace these bridges will begin in Summer 2019, and most of the work will be completed during nighttime freeway closures.

The project is expected to be complete in fall 2021, weather permitting.

As part of the “60 Swarm”, detour signage will be in place in advance including information posted on the Caltrans overhead changeable message signs (CMS) along freeways. Motorists are advised to use alternate freeways such as I-10, I-15, SR-210 and SR-91. Access to local areas and businesses is available by accessing on and off ramps from the opposite direction of the closure.

Additional information will be released along with a press conference on July 23, 2019.  The contractor will begin nighttime work with lane closures on Monday, July 22, which will continue throughout the length of the project. Lane closures will take place from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The speed limit will be lowered to 55 miles per hour within the project limits.
