SoCalGas has shared ways you can lower your energy usage and utility bill costs this winter. As heating systems work harder to keep the temperature inside warmer, customers can experience a three to seven times increase in their natural gas usage and utility bill costs.  

Here’s what you can do to reduce natural gas costs:  

  • Lower the thermostat 3 to 5 degrees – save up to 10%
  • Repair leaky ducts - costs 10 to 30 % more
  • Proper Caulking and weather-stripping - saves 10 to 15%  
  • Fix hot water leaks and reduce the use
  • Clean or replace furnace filters to reduce the use

  • Heating accounts for more than 50 percent of a customer’s total natural gas bill
  • Water heaters can account for 25 percent of natural gas use and work longer and harder to heat water in the winter
