Trail Difficulty Rating Definitions

Difficulty ratings are based on the degree of challenge a trail presents to an average user's physical ability and skill by using trial condition and route location factors such as alignments, steepness of grades, and gain and loss of elevation. We use the General Rating System.

Easy

Trail is no longer than two miles in length consisting of flat or nearly level terrain with a cumulative elevation change less than 250'. These hikes are generally suitable for anyone.

Moderate

Trail is two to four miles in length consisting of moderate terrain with a cumulative elevation change of 250' to 500'. These hikes are generally suitable for novice hikers who might be more conditioned.

Moderate Strenuous

Trail is two to four miles in length consisting of moderate terrain with cumulative elevation changes of 500' to 750'. These hikes are expected to be challenging for the novice hiker looking for a bit of a challenge.

Strenuous

Trail may be more than four miles long consisting of variable terrain with cumulative elevation changes of 750' or greater. These hikes are generally expected to challenge the experience hiker.
