About Homeland Security

The Department of Homeland Security was created to form a single department within the Federal Government whose primary mission is to protect our homeland. The new Department of Homeland Security was the most significant transformation of the U.S. government in over a half century, by largely transforming and realigning the confusing patchwork of government activities into the creation of one department.

One of the functions of the Department of Homeland Security is to educate citizens on how to prepare for emergencies. Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as making an emergency supply kit and developing a family communications plan, are the same for both a natural or man-made emergency.

However, there are important differences among potential emergencies that will impact the decisions you make and the actions you take. Learn more about how to prepare for emergencies at Ready.gov.
