What is CHAMP?
CHAMP is designed to match volunteer adult mentors with teenagers who will benefit from a supervised one-on-one relationship. Teenagers are at an important crossroad in their lives, and sometimes this can be very difficult and painful.
Having a relationship that is built on trust and respect, with an adult who is able to guide with care, can make a positive difference during this difficult time.
A volunteer mentor is matched with a teen, after completing the following steps:
- An initial interview
- Attendance at an orientation and training session
- Successful completion of the necessary background checks
As a mentor, there are many ways to contribute:
- Serving as a resource to a first-time, nonviolent, juvenile offender referred through the Youth Accountability Board (YAB).
- Supporting teens as they develop leadership, job or academic skills.
- Sharing time and experience while helping teens connect with appropriate recreation programs, counseling services, or volunteer opportunities.
- Supervising teens while they organize and complete community service projects.
